I decided to do some research about dreams because I wanted to have a better understanding about what they really reflect. Also because most of my dreams are far from realistic and portray things that you would see in movies.
According to Sigmund Freud, known as the father of psychoanalysis, dreams are "spy holes into our unconscious. Fears, desires and emotions that we are usually unaware of make themselves known through dreams. To Freud dreams were fundamentally about wish-fulfillment. Even "negative" dreams (punishment dreams and other anxiety dreams) are a form of wish-fulfilment; the wish being that certain events do not occur. Very often such dreams are interpreted as a warning."
Putting together his theory and my dreams, the pieces do fit and make sense!
My personal experiences with dreams is that for some strange reason I vaguely remember them. So if i do get messages and warnings in my dreams I wouldn't even know ! I absolutely have no control in what takes place, I don't think anyone does. It's like something within takes over. The power of the unconscious. The scary part about dreams is that they feel so real, especially if you're having a nightmare. sometimes I would just jump out of my sleep and be 'out of it' for a while.
As for the wish-fulfillment, I think fantasising is more healthy than harmful. It's a way of experiencing something that you would probably never get to do in real life. For example being married to a certain celebrity, luxuries .etc. I for one to it alot when I've found a new obsession, and as of now that is Andrew Bynum of the LALakers. lol As crazy as it sounds it is what it is. Theres just something calming about it. You have control in fantasising whereas in dreams you don't.
